YPSILANTI, Mich.(CornerHealth.org) – In partnership with Kiwanis International Club of Ann Arbor, the Corner Health Center has been awarded funding for an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) project that will help our patients who experience trauma.
"We are very excited to be able to offer this type of therapy to our patients," Behavioral Health Manager Jen Schwartz said. "Traditionally, the training for this modality of therapy is very expensive, so it is less often offered in non-profit settings. The Corner Health Center's ability to offer this to our patients is huge."
EMDR is a psychotherapy treatment that has the highest rate of effectiveness in treating people of all ages experiencing PTSD and the problems it can cause, like flashbacks, upsetting thoughts, and other symptoms.
"The reason this is so important is because EMDR is currently the most successful treatment for single-episode trauma and trauma in general," Schwartz stated. "We have a lot of patients at The Corner who have experienced trauma, so being able to use this tool {EMDR} will allow us to treat more patients in fewer visits. Our goal at The Corner is to reduce the number of young people affected by trauma and I believe this therapy will help suppress the impact of trauma in our community."
