[BLOG] Self C.A.R.E. — Mental Health Awareness Month

Written by Christina Duong, LLMSW.
In today’s world, people are carrying more and more – navigating stress, grief, identity, and pressure without the support or space to unpack it all.
Mental health isn’t just about diagnoses. It’s about how we cope, how we connect, how we care for ourselves and others. It shows up in how we respond to stress, how we move through classrooms, workplaces, homes, and community spaces. But to truly support mental wellness, we have to look beyond the individual. We can’t talk about mental health without talking about the systems around it. In today’s world—where racism, trans rights, violence, generational trauma, and economic instability shape daily life—people are facing very real stressors that impact their sense of safety, identity, and worth. Mental health awareness means naming these realities and building environments where people can thrive, not just survive.
In a time of constant media, overwhelming headlines, and oppressive legislation, choosing to slow down, reflect, and care for ourselves is a radical act. Therapy is one powerful tool. It validates what we’ve been through and helps us unpack why we think or act the way we do. Sometimes those patterns serve us. Sometimes they don’t. Therapy helps us understand both—and teaches us healthier ways to cope and connect. But therapy is one tool in the toolbox. Healing also lives in our routines, our relationships, and our community practices.
We often hear about “self-care,” but what we truly need is sustainable self-care. Just like we take vitamins to prevent physical depletion, caring for our mental health helps prevent burnout, numbness, and emotional exhaustion. One tool I use in my work is the C-A-R-E framework—an everyday, accessible approach to wellness and healing:
C - Community
Connection is essential. Whether it’s chosen family, mutual aid, affinity groups, creative collectives, barbershops, sports teams, block parties, or a friend who just gets it- community helps us feel less alone. Collective healing is resilience. It’s how many of our ancestors survived. It’s how we carry each other through.
A - Action
Acting reminds us that we’re not powerless. That might mean organizing, protesting, creating art, or checking in on someone. Action can also include rest (yes, rest!), saying no, and unfollowing accounts that spike your anxiety. Staying informed matters but so does protecting your peace. You don’t have to carry everything to care deeply. There’s a difference between being informed and being overwhelmed.
R - Reclaim
This is about taking your power back. Reclaiming is about releasing the shame that was never ours to hold—shame tied to survival, struggle, or identity. It’s honoring our survival, our story, our joy, and our right to heal. Reclaiming is both resistance and resilience. It’s affirming…
- “I’ve been through hard things, and I’m still here.”
- “I am not my pain, my diagnosis, or someone else’s assumptions about me.”
- “Everything I need is already within me.”
- “I am capable.”
E - Exercise
Consistently moving your body for 20–30 minutes, 3 times a week can reduce depressive symptoms and help regulate your nervous system. Movement helps us release endorphins, disrupt negative thought cycles, and reconnect to ourselves. It can look like yoga, dancing, running, weightlifting, walking in nature, etc. Exercising your boundaries is just as important, so your energy isn’t constantly depleted. Protect your peace.
Mental Health Awareness Month isn’t just about starting conversations—it’s about building habits, relationships, and systems that allow us to feel safe and whole. Healing is resilience. And when we heal together? That’s collective power!
