Summer safety

Summer days in Michigan often mean pool or beach days for many. To make the most of the fun, add a layer of safety so you can continue to enjoy yourself for years to come!
Sunscreen
Exposure to UV rays (produced by the sun) increases a person's risk of skin cancer. If you plan to spend time outside this summer be sure to:
- apply 30 SPF sunscreen and
reapply every 2 hours. Sweat, water, and physical activity can cause sunscreen to rub off. Broad-spectrum sunscreen provides the most protection. - Try to avoid sun exposure during the peak hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- Add protective clothing to your summer wardrobe. Hats and swim shirts are an important part of sun protection.
Water Safety
Swimming is a crucial skill for those with access to water. All supervising adults should remain close to their swimmers to provide constant, attentive supervision.
- Never leave your child unattended around water.
- Inflatable arm bands, pool noodles, swim rings and rafts are considered toys. Not safety devices. These may provide a false sense of security around water.
- The best way to keep your swimmer safe in the water is to use a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) approved life jacket. These life jackets are indicated by a label noting "U.S. Coast Guard Approved," followed by an approval number.
The Corner Health Center wants you to stay safe this summer. Visit your local community pool to see what swimming classes are available for your child at any age!
Have a great summer!
