    School is back in session!

A little planning now can make the first few weeks feel a lot easier. Here are seven simple ways to get yourself ready and start the school year strong.

    1. Check your schedule

Before the first day, look over your class schedule.

Make sure you know what classes you have, when they meet, and where you need to go.

Attending your school's open house will give you the chance to get familiar with your classes, teachers, and new route.

If something looks wrong or you have questions, talk to your school counselor or another trusted staff member before classes get too busy.

    2. Reset your sleep schedule

A few days before school starts, begin going to bed earlier and earlier each night. Do this until you're going to bed at the time you'd go to sleep for school.

If you have sports, clubs, a job, or other after school activities, think about how they will fit into your daily routine. Adjust your sleep schedule until you feel your best during the day.

The suggested amount of sleep for high schoolers is eight hours per day.

Not getting enough sleep can have a lasting impact on you. Learn more, here.

    3. Get supplies without spending a lot

Make a short list of what you actually need before buying supplies.

Community events, your school, and local libraries often have free notebooks, pencils, loaner laptops, printing, transportation help, or other resources to make your start to school strong.

You can also find low-cost supplies at local dollar stores, Family Dollar, Dollar General, Five Below, and thrift stores.

Patients of the Corner can visit the Corner Store for free books, food, household items, baby clothes, and more. Learn more about the Corner Store and Food Pantry.

    4. Learn your school

Knowing where things are can make the first week much less stressful.

Visit your school's open-house. Take that time to walk through your school and get familiar with your surroundings.

    Key places to know:

    • Your classrooms
    • The main office
    • The library
    • Tutoring or homework-help spaces
    • Printing stations
    • The nurse or health office
    • The cafeteria
    • Bus stops and parent pick-up
    • A quiet place to study

    5. Advocate for yourself & ask for help early on

If you are confused, falling behind, or struggling at home, ask for help sooner rather than later.

If an appointment, work shift, family responsibility, or other issue may affect school or attendance, tell your teacher or school staff as early as you can.

Most teachers are understanding and flexible as long as communication happens early on.

Teachers and staff have access to many resources and options to support you when they know what is going on.

    6. Make time to enjoy school

Did you know school is about more than tests and homework?

School is a place for you to explore yourself, your interests, and your strengths through clubs, sports, events, volunteer opportunities, or other activities you enjoy.

Getting involved in your school can make it more enjoyable and help you build long-lasting skills and relationships.

Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Make time for yourself and for fun along the way!
